‘Cosmopolis’ in ‘Fnac Contact’ magazine + Rob and David Cronenberg Interview – France

Posted By Twilightmami ~ May 9, 2012 7:47PM

David Cronenberg

It was likely to be part of the 65th edition of the Cannes film festival, the new film by David Cronenberg, Cosmopolis, and the lead actor is Robert Pattinson. An unexpected but promising collaboration, where Twilight star portrays a multi-millionaire who drives through Manhattan in a high tech limousine , premise of a self-destructive odyssey.

Contact Fnac: What is your motivation by adapting Don DeLillo’s novel?

David Cronenberg: The dialogues. Reading the book, I thought that I would love to hear from the lips of excellent actors. And from a cinamatographic point of view, it was a wonderful challenge to shoot in a limousine in motion. I asked my team to watch the films Das Boot and Lebanon, two films shot in secluded places . It’s quite liberating to have a scenic structure as rigorous as it requires rethinking the traditional approach of cinema, not only regarding the movement of the camera but also regarding the choreography of acting.

Contact Fnac: The choice of Robert Pattinson to play Eric Packer surprised the media. Yet this makes sense.

David Cronenberg: Casting is an occult art. This is something enormously important work as a director. You can kill your film, even before the shooting, by bad casting choice.s And yet there are no instructions to guide you. I felt that Robert Pattinson had the required the charisma to embody a strangely neurotic , powerful and yet immature man, who evolves in front of us during the odyssey that occurs through the film. Eric is not a lovable character, and I needed an actor who is not afraid of that. But he is also fascinating, hypnotic, and these are qualities that an actor possesses or lacks. Robert has them.

Fnac Contact: Power, alienation, self-destruction … Would you say that Eric Packer is close to your previous characters?

David Cronenberg: The brilliant and self-destructive characters are my favorites. They give off such an aura, and the shock is so instructive, if not entertaining. I am perpetually curious, and sometimes shocked, by our attitudes as humans, and by the human condition in general.

Contact Fnac: You ised to be snubbed by the Cannes audience, and then you finish as Jury President. What has changed?

David Cronenberg: It took some time before the critics and part of the audience understood what I was trying to do. This is why it is important to have a long career, since your previous films highlight the first, and with the fullness of time, the specter of your work becomes like a little universe that makes sense for everyone : a creative sense of the month.

Robert Pattinson

Contact Fnac: What was your first reaction when you were offered the role of Eric Packer?

Robert Pattinson: I had read the script a year ago and I thought I hadbabsolutely no chance of getting a role in the film, not to mention Eric’s part . And when David (Cronenberg) called me, out of the blue , I was more than surprised! It was clearly one of the most exciting and demanding projects that I could read.

Contact Fnac: You said that your experience on the set was kind of ‘crazy’. What do you mean exactly?

Robert Pattinson: I couldn’t compared it to anything I have done before. The script included some really unusual stylistic ideas and I think nobody really knew how to approach this type of material. You know, it’s rare to work with a director who allows his film to evolve at this point, organically.

Contact Fnac: Are there any other filmmakers you would like to work with ?

Robert Pattinson: There are too many to mention everyone . But there are French directors including Jacques Audiard, for example, who made quite exceptional films

First 'Cosmopolis' Review - From Premiere FR

Translation thanks to our Sonia :)

New York is on war footing. The President of the USA is passing through and demonstrations are threating to drown Manhattan in chaos. Eric Packer, 28 years old millionaire, doesn't care. No matter what happens, he will go get his haircut on the other side of town.

We're not going to lie, whether we like David Cronenberg's recent movies, we were seriously missing the filmmaker of Videodrome and Crash. Pop open the champagne because he's back in every shot of Cosmopolis. Even though he's adapting someone else's work, the Canadian filmmaker recognized his young/offsprings in the novel of DeLillo. The absurd and persistant odyssey of a young wolf in finance who parades collegues, mistresses and doctors in his high-tech limo. When he reaches his destination, he might be left with nothing (the Japanese currency threatens his waller, his wife is more and distant, it's getting unbearable.) but the answer of the question that haunts him, without being able to articulate it: Can the one who possesses everything still desire anything else?

Cronenberg made sure that all his obsessions punctuate his route, whether they are intellectual (the search for 'another' reality) or carnal/physical (another scene that will make people talk, Packer learns that his prostate asymmetrical). Enthroned in the back seat of his limousine Robert Pattinson reveals a deepness that gets more & more fascinating as his character gets closer to hittng rock bottom/gets closer to the abyss. The fear that surrenders his face in the last moments doesnt belong only to this anti-hero that arrived at the point of no return, but it's also the fear of an actor who tests his limits with an unsupected bravery. With a feverish and decadent ride in Hell, Cosmopolis proves that he's not done testing them.

Rob on the cover of Premiere (France) - NEW Photoshoot and Interview

Posted By Twilightmami ~ May 9, 2012 12:11PM

Translation thanks to Sonia

Star of Cosmopolis, the new movie by David Cronenberg, in competition at Cannes, RP was a willing participant to a crazy photoshoot that lasted 13 hours! Find out more in the May issue.

In general, when you organize a photoshoot with an actor, whose movies made more than 2.7 billion of dollars all over the world, you except someone cold and shy, someone with a controled image and with a safeguard. Everything is timed to the last minute, especially if the actor arrives late, everything has to be started over again. I say 'in general' because all of this doesn't apply to Robert Pattinson!

It's at the end of our interview that the actor comes up with the idea of a photoshoot dedicated to David Cronenberg's movies. Like an hommage to his respect for the filmmaker, who by casting him in Cosmopolis, offered him not only a passport for after Twilight but aslo the opportunity to come and celebrate his entry to the adulte age, on the steps of Cannes on May 25th.

To say that he got involved in the making of the photoshoot is an euphemism. The first images of Scanners and Videodrome we prepared for him as an inspiration for the future snapshots came back to us with an unexepected commentary: Rob was sorry that they weren't more daring, wanting to push all the limits with this shoot - the complete opposite of what someone in his position would have asked. Two days later, the photograph Eliot Lee Hazel and his crew - sort of strange for this kind of shoot (a special effect makeup artist, a pregnant lady ...) - met in a glummy hotel in downtown L.A. to give the go-ahead of this shoot that lasted for exactly 13 hours.

After seeing the results of this shoot, we're ready to bet that you won't look at Robert Pattinson the same way again. That the last pretence who might still weigh on the actor will fly away as fast as they appeared.

Colorist Jennifer J. Tells Us How She Took Kristen & Rob Back To Their Edward & Bella ‘Roots’

Posted By Twilightmami ~ May 8, 2012 7:22PM

When director Bill Condon recently announced Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson would pop in their vampire contact lenses one more time for a few days of ‘Breaking Dawn- Part 2′ pickups, we had one vital question: how would Kristen and Rob get their hair into shape for Bella and Edward? KSN had the pleasure of chatting with celebrity Colorist Jennifer J. about how she transformed both Kristen and Rob’s locks back into that of The Cullens.
Most recently, Jennifer transformed Kristen into a raven-haired beauty for ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’, so Jennifer’s first hurdle was to reverse her own work. “Going from black to brown is definitely a challenge,” Jennifer explained of the process, “especially since Kristen’s hair color was grown out so much from not coloring it since SWATH.” Jennifer said it took hours of coloring to get Bella back, “I had to darken Kristen’s natural root since she’s so light naturally and lighten her ends to match her newly darkened root.”

While it’s often just another day at the salon for someone like Kristen to alter her hair for her films, we wondered if it was as easy for a client like Rob. We asked Jennifer if there is a different mentality for a colorist when working with men. Jennifer detailed,

There are two different types of color for men. Color that looks like it’s colored and color that looks like it’s not colored. I specialize in men’s hair color because I have a lot of tricks up my sleeve that can make hair color for men look great but natural. So many men have problems with their hair color looking red and brassy which reads fake on a man but I use color in a way so that it really looks untouched and more masculine.

But, Rob isn’t exactly a stranger to changing his hair color since he’s had different shades for The Saga and ‘Water for Elephants’. In fact, Rob was a good sport in the process. “Rob was happy that his hair color was grown out,” Jennifer said, “so he wanted something as temporary as possible.” While they had to stay focused on Bella’s look, Kristen also had some input in what the final product would be. “Kristen wanted something that would be healthy and shiny looking,” Jennifer described. “I used all semi-permanent colors from Wella Professionals, and they are super shiny and vibrant.”
